Statement:
We are committed to being
God's Presence in the Grantville area with a mission of evangelism and
outreach that seeks to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, inviting all
to join with us in the worship of our Lord. We are committed to
read, study, and meditate upon the word of God. Through prayer and
the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to respond to those in
need.
Brief
History:
The people of Shells Evangelical Lutheran
Church first worshipped in a log schoolhouse near the present
church building. The first part of the present church building
was erected in 1825. The ground was donated by Major John
Shell. The cornerstone was laid on May 28, 1825.
In 1838, the church was plastered and some
repairs made. Two years later, stoves were purchased and
installed. There was a stove and a chimney in each corner of
the building. In 1884, the church was weather boarded and
painted.
In 1835, the first addition was built onto
the church. On November 13, 1835, the original cornerstone was
moved and relaid in the corner of the main part of the present
building. This addition included the stairs to the balcony, the
narthex, and the bell tower.
Between 1903 and 1907, the interior of the
church was renovated. The stained glass windows were
installed. The cost of each window was $50.00. They were
bought by members of the congregation and presented to the
church.
Groundbreaking for a new Christian Education
Building was June 5, 1966 and cornerstone laying was September
25, 1966.
