Altars have been covered with fine cloths, known as linens, since Old Testament times, and paraments have adorned chancel furnishings since at least the 5th century A.D.  Following is a brief explanation of some of the symbols that appear on these items:

The Pelican is a symbol of our Lord's atonement and the Redeemer and is often found in Christian murals, frescos, paintings and stained glass. It is said that in times of famine, the female pelican tears open her breast and feeds her young with her own blood. She dies in order that they may live. In like manner, our Lord died upon the cross that we may live.

Palm branches represent Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem..."So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord-the King of Israel." (John 12: 13)
